The Clear and Present Danger Threatening the American Workforce

The future of the American workforce is being threatened in ways not yet fully understood by business leaders and politicians yet the process has been ongoing for decades and should be obvious to anyone paying attention.

Back in the 80′s calls by Pat Buchanan to protect American manufacturers went unheeded and as a result America and the middle class are much worse off.  It’s been said NAFTA cost the country 700,000 jobs and which along with Progressive policies, led to the destruction of Detroit and America’s manufacturing base.

Well, get ready for the next massive job loss coming now that the information age has made most “business processes” a commodity that can be utilized with no other consideration needed by CEO’s other than the bottom line.

While the ability of workers to work from home, on a companies secure network, has made it possible to bring the best talent to the table at a much cheaper cost, the downside for American workers is that this work can now be down anywhere in the world (all things being equal) and more than likely at a cheaper cost elsewhere.

In other words the only reason for a company to hire one person over another has become simply a matter of costs, security and nationalism.  If the security is not an issue (which we all know is not the case) and CEO’s can claim they “owe it to the stockholders to get the work done as cheaply as possible…wherever that may be”, then there is very little reason for a company to do business using American workers when the same work can be done anywhere else in the world for half the price.

That is exactly what has led to the loss of American jobs in the mortgage industry.   There are very few large American firms left that offer the back-end auditing, processing, underwriting and payment servicing services because the large banks (who we bailed out) use foreign companies to do this work because the labor is much cheaper, human rights are secondary and no one complains about a “living wage”.

This has been going on for over a decade and indeed Citi has been outsourcing many of their mortgage jobs to India for over 15 years and this trend has led us to where we are today where the majority of firms offering those services to the banks are foreign owned (do you know where your SS#is?) and just recently one of the few American mortgage services firms left, OPUS Capital, was bought out by Wipro, a foreign owned business process outsourcing firm.

In November and December alone the mortgage industry lost 15,000 mortgage positions and that is on top of thousands of others over the last few years.  Let me be clear, the work is still being done, it’s just being done by foreign companies as-a-matter-of-course now and American mortgage workers are used to handle “over-flow” not the other way around like it used to be and how it was sold to congress and the American public.

The same thing is happening to our IT sector and our Healthcare sector and indeed it is a sad betrayal by this administration to not once but twice choose a foreign company over an American firm to build the Obamacare website (the new company is Accenture, who you might recall bought Arthur Anderson).

That is why I am calling on congress to require that American federal contracts to go to American firms and workers only.  It’s pretty clear there are political reasons these firms got the Obamacare contracts and that should be fully investigated

Frankly I am so sick of these CEO’s trying to say American workers can’t do these jobs.  It’s nonsense, I don’t buy it and I believe it’s just another lie by the Progressives in coordination with the crony capitalist at the Chamber of Commerce.

I am calling for American workers to make it clear to Republican and Democrats alike…”No Amnesty, no H1b visas” and require the federal government to use American firms only.  It’s time for our representatives to quit talking about protecting workers and bringing jobs back and actually do something meaningful.
